12 Days of Septic Tips: A Homeowner’s Guide to Holiday Septic Care

December 15, 2025 //  by AshleyR

The Christmas season is full of gatherings, guests, cooking, and celebrations all of which can put extra strain on your septic system. At Farmer’s Septic Service, we see more septic issues pop up during the holidays than almost any other time of year. That’s why we put together this Holiday Edition of the 12 Days of Septic Tips to help homeowners protect their systems, avoid emergencies, and enjoy a stress free Christmas.

Below are practical Christmas septic tips and holiday septic care reminders every homeowner should know.

🎄 Day 1: Be Mindful of Extra Water Use

Holiday guests mean more showers, laundry, and dishwashing. Spread out water usage throughout the day to prevent overloading your septic system.

🎄 Day 2: Watch What Goes Down the Drain

Grease, fats, oils, and food scraps should never go down your sink. Pour grease into a container and throw it away to avoid clogs and backups.

🎄 Day 3: Don’t Treat Your Toilet Like a Trash Can

Paper towels, wipes (even “flushable” ones), feminine products, and diapers can damage your system. Stick to toilet paper only.

🎄 Day 4: Use Your Garbage Disposal Sparingly

Garbage disposals add extra solids to your septic tank. During the holidays, try composting or throwing food scraps in the trash instead.

🎄 Day 5: Spread Out Laundry Loads

Avoid doing multiple loads of laundry back to back. Space them out to reduce stress on your septic tank and drainfield.

🎄 Day 6: Protect Your Drainfield

Keep vehicles, heavy equipment, and foot traffic off your drainfield, especially during winter when frozen ground is more vulnerable to damage.

🎄 Day 7: Keep Snow on the Drainfield

It may sound strange, but snow acts as insulation. Avoid plowing or clearing snow from your drainfield to help prevent freezing.

🎄 Day 8: Fix Leaks Before the Holidays

A leaking toilet or faucet can add hundreds of gallons of water to your system each day. Repair leaks early to avoid holiday septic problems.

🎄 Day 9: Avoid Last Minute Septic Emergencies

If your tank is due for pumping, don’t wait until guests arrive. Scheduling septic maintenance before Christmas can save you from costly repairs.

🎄 Day 10: Know the Warning Signs

Slow drains, gurgling sounds, sewage odors, or wet spots outside are signs your septic system needs attention, especially during heavy holiday use.

🎄 Day 11: Don’t Use Additives as a “Quick Fix”

Septic additives and treatments won’t prevent problems and can sometimes do more harm than good. Routine maintenance is the best solution.

🎄 Day 12: Call a Professional When in Doubt

If something doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. Calling a septic professional early can prevent small issues from becoming major holiday disruptions.

Enjoy the Holidays Without Septic Stress

With a little planning and these Christmas septic tips, you can protect your septic system throughout the holiday season. Proper holiday septic system care helps ensure your home stays comfortable, safe, and worry free while you focus on what matters most time with family and friends.

If you have questions, need an inspection, or want to schedule septic pumping before the end of the year, Farmer’s Septic Service is here to help.
